Woher kommt die CDU / Where does the CDU (Christian Democratic Union) come from?
The initial idea came from a book published in the 1970ies “15 Millionen beleidigte Deutsche oder woher stammt die CDU” (15 million upset Germans or where does the CDU stem from?) in which the then Minister of Finance (Alex Möller) implied that the CDU is closer to those who caused WWI and WWII than to the social democratic party (SPD). Or in other words he implied that the CDU is closer to fascist parties than to democratic ones.
Fast forward some 50 years, Chancellor Merz muttered in July 2023: “Wir sind eine Alternative für Deutschland mit Substanz” (We are an alternative for Germany [note: Alternative für Deutschland is the name of the fascist political party AfD] with content), thus positioning the CDU close to the AfD and playing to their agenda. This might seem odd but becomes obvious regarding the second quote, this time muttered by the god-father of CDU/CSU Franz Josef Strauß (1987): “Rechts von der CDU/CSU darf es keine demokratisch legitimierte Partei geben” (There cannot be a democratic legitimate party right of the CDU/CSU).
This work has a conceptual aspect; it is printed on AfD propaganda. For this “newspaper” of Hamburg’s AfD branch was collected, dissolved and new paper was made. This handmade paper serves as a base for the quotes by Merz [top] and Strauß [bottom]. The print technique used is a hand-engraved linocut. Due to the nature of the print each copy is unique.
