Spotlight works

Some works to keep an eye on.

  • Woher kommt die CDU / Where does the CDU (Christian Democratic Union) come from?

The initial idea came from a book published in the 1970ies “15 Millionen beleidigte Deutsche oder woher stammt die CDU” (15 million upset Germans or where does the CDU stem from?) in which the then Minister of Finance (Alex Möller) implied that the CDU is closer to those who caused WWI and WWII than to the social democratic party (SPD). Or in other words he implied that the CDU is closer to fascist parties than to democratic ones.

Fast forward some 50 years, Chancellor Merz muttered in July 2023: “Wir sind eine Alternative für Deutschland mit Substanz” (We are an alternative for Germany [note: Alternative für Deutschland is the name of the fascist political party AfD] with content), thus positioning the CDU close to the AfD and playing to their agenda. This might seem odd but becomes obvious regarding the second quote, this time muttered by the god-father of CDU/CSU Franz Josef Strauß (1987): “Rechts von der CDU/CSU darf es keine demokratisch legitimierte Partei geben” (There cannot be a democratic legitimate party right of the CDU/CSU).

This work has a conceptual aspect; it is printed on AfD propaganda. For this “newspaper” of Hamburg’s AfD branch was collected, dissolved and new paper was made. This handmade paper serves as a base for the quotes by Merz [top] and Strauß [bottom]. The print technique used is a hand-engraved linocut. Due to the nature of the print each copy is unique.

  • German journalist Dunja Hayali painted on a rainbow flag. This is the original version of a mural that spontaneously showed up on Hamburg’s Reeperbahn in September 2025. Following immense insults, the presenter faced simply for doing her job, the mural was painted in support of the journalist. Using the rainbow flag as a backdrop serves as a metaphor for an open and diverse democracy, while the fingerprint pattern reflects on the traces each person leaves on society.

  • Recently, we installed a new artwork, visualizing the UN's SDG-8 "Sustainable growth and decent work". The motive was developed as a commissioned work for Hamburg's NGO Global Goals. More about this project can be found here and an in-depth analysis in this podcast  (German).

Short summary: "When thinking about economic growth, one buzzword comes into mind, which is used as an excuse/explanation for any economical decision “wealth”. According to (Western) politicians, wealth only can be guaranteed by eternal economic growth. However, we argue that wealth incorporates all those achievements, that are sacrificed in the name of economic growth: safe working conditions, environmental protection, education, affordable living, health, happiness, democracy, etc,

Thus, we created an artwork disagreeing with SDG8 and the praise of GDP in general. This work is multilayered, touching subjects as circular economy, religion (neo-Catholicism), crypto, climate crisis etc. However, the central aspect remains, chasing the GDP sacrifices our wealth."

  • I wanted to do a screen print version of my Rainbow Nation mural for quite a while now. After the recent events (prohibition of pride parade by Hungarian's prime minister and not allowing to flag the German parliament with the rainbow flag during the pride parade) it became clear to me, that the rainbow flag itself is quite political. But it is so much more than showing solidarity with queer people. The rainbow flag a symbol of democracy, human rights and dignity. For the design I chose people that can act as placeholders for a diverse society. The blank square is the place for everyone to find themselves as part of society. As the rainbow flag is more than just a flag, this artwork is far more than just that: is meant to be hung in spaces where it can serve as a statement.   Details:
