Recently, I got invited by the Urban Nation in Berlin to paint a mural at UNartig Festival. The festival was held to celebrate the newest exhibition at UN: TALKING and other Banana Skins. UNartig, German for naughty, Festival’s idea was to show works that encourage discussion. For this I painted a new work titled “Reise nach Lesbos” (Dancing Chairs of Lesbos).
“The scene reminds of a children’s game, each time the music stops a chair is taken away until one kid remains – the winner. Happy kids are playing the game, but something is off, the chairs have been replaced by life vests and the EU is playing the music. About 50 % of people fleeing via the Mediterranean are underage, yet it looks innocent, just normal kids playing and laughing. It is supposed to look that way because it became normal that people are drowning in the Mediterranean which is why we do not hear anything about it anymore.”
You’ll find a nice article by Brooklyn Street Art about the piece, here.
