I first painted this portrait of Foyel during a Festival at the clinic Torcuato de Alvear in La Paternal. 2014 marked the 130th anniversary of the defeat of Foyel. He was the last of the chiefs fighting against the genocide against indigenous tribes led by the president of Argentina. While Foyel seems to be forgotten in Argentina’s history, the president’s face still adorns the 100 pesos bill. The colorful background is made of the whipala which is the traditional flag of the indigenous tribes of what is now Argentina.
