When the Deutsche Bahn (German Railway) asked me to redesign the metro Station Veddel, I wanted to create something both for the people passing by the station (as every train going or coming from the South in Hamburg has to pass it) as well as something representing the people of this quarter. For that I used the technique of halftone to create faces as they only work when seen from afar, close up they are just made of dots or squares. On the other hand, all of the faces are connected by a pattern that can only be seen close-up but resemble a wallpaper pattern when seen from the distance.
To create faces that represent the people of the Veddel, I spent time with people there, visited them at their places of work, on the streets, in cafes etc to get to know them and to see what the Veddel is about. Of those wanting to participate I took various pictures and then combined their features to create new faces (the nose of one person with the eye of another etc.).
The inspiration came from a project I did a few years ago: (7 daughter’s of) EVE . But for the Veddel Station I did not want to use the faces of models but instead of people living, working or feeling connected to the Veddel quarter.
